Discover the simple yet beautiful expressive medium of watercolour. In this workshop you will learn how to emphasize the luminosity and vitality that gives this medium its magic. Cass will teach you how, with strong contrast, you too will create mood, movement and the all important art of leaving plenty of light in your painting. The art of choosing subject matter, composition, perspective and tips on improving your drawing skills will be discussed and examined. The techniques explored in this workshop will include washes, variegated washes, wet-in-wet techniques and dry brush painting to help give your painting the tonal values that create a work of art. You will learn how to think of your painting as a continuous work of art and the importance of working quickly, decisively and yet spontaneously. Subject matter will include a variety of topics, from streetscapes and landscapes to seascapes and still life. Demonstrations providing guidance and appraisal will be ongoing during the workshop.

Capturing the Impression of Light and Atmosphere in Watercolour

Discover how to unravel the secrets of the luminous world of watercolour by first learning to understand light and atmosphere, and how to capture it in your work. Once you understand this you will know what and where to focus on, this knowledge will open your eyes to the way you see and apply paint.Learn to see what you're looking at and paint what you see. You will be shown how to break away from traditional way of applying watercolours, to a more easily understood way of observing and seeing first, then apply the paint. From simple compositions of seascapes, landscapes and street scenes, and portraits you will learn to master techniques to skilfully paint any subject. Demonstrations and talks dealing with techniques will be the key to unlocking the magic of this engaging medium. This is for those starting out or those with experience wishing to break free of barriers constraining their work.

Simplify the Fundamental and Discover the Magical Techniques of Watercolours

Discover the unique transparent qualities and creative potential of this beautiful medium and the techniques associated with the exquisite luminosity of watercolours. This class is designed for beginners and students with some experience seeking a better understanding of materials, design, techniques and drawing methods to achieve vibrant, translucent and impressionistic qualities in their artwork. Individual guidance, demonstrations and discussions will deal with all aspects of the properties of watercolour pigments, colour mixing, light, understanding tone, composition and the watercolour palette while encouraging you to experiment boldly with this unpredictable medium. Emphasis will be on helping students to a fuller understanding of the lightness and fluidity of this misunderstood medium, to exploit it with confidence keeping colour clean and retaining freshness. Once students have an understanding of the fundamentals of watercolours, they are able to produce paintings full of clarity and crispness.

Watercolour Painting – Capture the Landscape using Photos
Length: 8 weeks Cost: $259
This workshop will prepare you with the fundamentals skills necessary for painting the landscape. Painting landscapes are fascinating and rewarding for the watercolour painter ready to explore new subjects. Stephanie will guide the class through techniques, composition and design principles and explore some creative technique and experimental methods while working in the studio environment from photos. Appropriate demonstrations will feature various aspects of the landscape showing a wide variety of topics from inner city streetscapes to tranquil seascapes and beaches, rural landscapes and everywhere in between. Each day will present new scenes and challenges and you will learn how to capture the essence of sceneries you admire and produce a finished artwork in one sitting. Marine, landscape and urban subjects will be painted and students are required to bring suitable reference material.
