LEARN TO SEE - DISCOVER THE SPIRIT OF DRAWING

Have you always wanted to learn to draw what you see? Pam will take you on a non-confronting journey of self discovery to build your confidence whether you are a raw beginner or more advanced student.  This exciting class will show you that you can draw and will help you develop the fundamentals and techniques of drawing. Learning to see as an artist sees is an integral aspect of learning to draw!  You will learn to expand your existing creative expression and appreciate what you have been looking at in a different way. This course is designed to improve skills and enhance artistic development using a variety of mediums including charcoal, pencil, conte, crayons and inks.

THE ESSENCE OF FIGURE DRAWING

Figure drawing is the traditional cornerstone of art training. The human figure offers every challenge one could require - line and tone, perspective and composition. Drawing the figure is exciting and challenging in any medium, it is a complex form of light and shadow, with subtle variations in colour and texture, possessing both complex angles and smooth curves and all interacting in an endless variety of configurations. You will be inspired to learn ways of interpreting life and drawing by seeking out the essence of expressive line and tone. In this class we hope to encourage more better figurative art. This is a rare opportunity to take drawing classes with Jeremy Kirwan-Ward.

PAINTING IN RICH, VIBRANT ACRYLICS OR OIL (SEMI REPRESENTATIONAL PAINTING)

Kim is a practising artist with vast experience with acrylics, oils, abstract and semi representational painting. her art is influenced by strong design principles and exciting colours. Experiment with a range of paint mediums and subjects and discover an imaginative approach and fresh ways of finding inspiration, you will explore design, composition, painting applications, as well as a variety of painting techniques and methods. Learn to use light, shapes and textures in everyday objects and scenes as the basis for your paintings. Start on your journey into the world of colour and add a rich vibrancy to your paintings and by working in an intuitive manner you will create exciting new artworks. Demonstrations and talks will be ongoing throughout the course.

AN INTENSIVE INTRODUCTION TO OIL PAINTING AND COLOUR

Dates: Monday 11th to Friday 15th January Cost: $179


This class aims to develop confidence and understanding of materials to deal with image creation. It will teach the method of structuring the painting palette and mixing techniques, colour theory, control of colour and identifying colours, properties of oil painting and application of paint of mediums. You will be guided through a series of painting exercises, beginning with colour mixing and understanding the colour wheel. All the basics will be covered i.e. preparing painting surfaces and the use of different tools. This course will also answer many questions about different materials used in oil painting.  This class will save you hours of wasted time and paint.

FLOWERS IN WATERCOLOURS, BIG, BOLD AND LOOSE

Splashing on colour, lifting out, masking out, creating exciting shapes with tone, line and mixing colours. Discover ways of creating paintings using varied watercolour techniques that give more magic to this engaging medium. Combining control and `spontaneity is the challenge of these classes and having the freedom to produce fresh and imaginative works which are both lively and fascinating involves a degree of planning.  This workshop will combine experimental and traditional techniques in a relaxed environment that encourages personal creativity.

WATERCOLOUR LANDSCAPE PAINTING

LEARN TO PAINT YOUR OUTDOOR OR TRAVEL EXPERIENCES

Learn to document your travel experiences and create a snapshot in watercolours. Whether you are travelling overseas,holidaying in Australia or just outdoors, you will learn how to capture your experience in watercolours. Watercolours are the easiest painting medium to carry with you when you travel or paint outdoors. Spend a week on the banks of the Swan River capturing, water, sky, boats, distant views and with Penny’s guidance capture a slice of Summer to put on your wall. This course will help you understand colour, composition and scale and how to plan and create finished watercolour paintings. The first day you will meet at Claremont School of Art for an introduction

DISCOVER AND EXPLORE IMPRESSIONISM

This course will focus on Impressionistic painting. Impressionism is capturing a moment in time, the instantaneous light and the mood. This course will start out by looking at Impressionist artworks to analyse composition, light, colour and brushstrokes. We will explore the subtleties of colour relationships and creating a mood with “colour accords”. The class will begin by doing some initial sketches with an emphasis on natural light, landscape or atmospheric effects,which will form the basis for larger works of art. The class will focus on strategies for placing colours together, reflective colour in shadows, working impasto, wet on wet and using visible brushstrokes.

CREATE AN INSPIRATIONAL OIL PAINTING

This course provides an introduction to the rich traditions of oil painting. This system is perfect for beginners or advanced students as it divides the painting using form, tone, and colour to create an original work of art. Using photographic references you will learn how to build up the under painting and then how to apply colour using the transformative effects of glazing. By the end of this course you will develop an understanding of materials, shape, tone, and colour and will have a solid foundation in painting, able to attempt other challenging styles of work.

DISCOVER THE FREEDOM AND EXPRESSION OF FIGURE DRAWING

Learn to create a mood with vibrant, bold, linear and captivating works of art.  This course allows you to develop a creative and inspiring approach to life drawing while keeping the underlying rhythm of the pose. Rough, gesture, or action sketches are usually rendered very quickly because the benefits of making sketches are in the process, creating magnificent linear drawings. The goal is to capture a mood, expression or dynamic gesture on your drawing paper. You will develop an understanding of form structure and composition using different mediums.

DRAWING-PERSPECTIVE IS EVERYWHERE IN THE RICH WORLD AROUND US

Every image, be it human for, still-life, plants, trees, landscape, buildings and the world around us has influences of perspective. Find the simple and interesting way to analyse and reproduce these effects. This class will help you develop a comprehensive understanding of perspective from the ARTISTS point of view. You will become aware of the magic and excitement of visual understanding of the dynamics of perspective.

INTRODUCTION TO OIL PAINTING VIA STILL- LIFE    

Dates: Monday 18th to Friday 22nd January Cost: $179


This course is aimed at those with some prior knowledge of the basic techniques of oil painting; representational painting will be the main focus, via the genre of still-life. This course will cover the ‘Grisaille’ Technique; this is one of the oldest techniques in painting. This method separates the painting into three easy manageable stages of shape, tone, and colour. You will learn how to build up and utilize the under-painting and then how to apply colour in the form of glazes. You will develop skills in painting light and shadow, composition, depth and meaning in still life.

DEVELOP EXCITING VIBRANT CONTEMPORARY ABSTRACT PAINTING

Dates: Monday 18th to Friday 22nd January Cost: $179


In this course, we will be looking at painting in a non representational style. We will explore a number of ways to begin a new work to make your painting more exciting, using a limited palette. The class will also focus on warm and cool colours, tone in colour, good tertiary colour mixing. Discussion will be ongoing drawing inspiration from the historical background of abstract painting and the examination of works by some current Australian and International artists. The focus will be on developing your understanding of how to use paint to express what you want to say. You will experiment
with a number of tools other than brushes to apply paint and explore a variety of inspiration techniques.

CAPTURE THE ILLUSION OF LIGHT IN PASTELS

Dates: Monday 18th to Friday 22nd January Cost: $179


Working from photos, this workshop will focus on the techniques you need to produce impressive finished pastel paintings. To capture the illusion of light you must truly understand it and this will be explained and demonstrated. You will learn how to organise and set up colours before starting, how to see and apply the relationships of tonal value to the layers and the importance of composition. You will be inspired by the simple, common sense, step by step demonstration of different stages of progression from start to finish to achieve impressive results.

EXQUISITE PRINTMAKING

Dates: Monday 18th to Friday 22nd January Cost: $179


This workshop is designed to introduce students to a variety of printmaking techniques that can be used at home or in studio. Techniques cover woodcut, collograph, monoprint drawing, monotype, dry point and how to register your print correctly Danilo’s rich knowledge as an international practising artist and edition printer will help students learn to analyse artworks and the course will include illustrations of original works by artists and professional printmakers.  The lecturer will provide and prepare the diverse range of materials, cost per student $25.

EXCITING SEMI-REPRESENTATIONAL PAINTING IN ACRYLICS

Dates: Monday 18th to Friday 22nd January Cost: $179


This course will look at the flexibility of acrylics as a painting medium. We will discuss materials (paints, brushes, surfaces, colour and more), the basic principles of design, and look at a variety of approaches to painting. You will paint in a semi representational style encouraging some risk taking in a supportive environment. Peta will approach colour mixing and colour theory in a way that helps people understand how to use the information to make their paintings more exciting. She uses colour freely but with a focus on tone in colour using a limited palette. There will be some demonstrations of techniques and resource material will be provided to inspire new ways of thinking.

CONTEMPORARY RELIEF SCULPTURE USING TRADITIONAL SKILLS WITH CLAY

Dates: Monday 18th to Friday 22nd January Cost: $179

A relief sculpture is a modelled form on a two-dimensional background. If you have never done sculpture or would like to further develop your skills as well as improve your ability to understand the construction of representational pieces, you will develop an understanding of the properties of clay and their building capacity, looking at the fundamentals of proportion, scale and modelling techniques. Completed artworks are fired in a kiln (finishes may be applied), they make great wall plaques, water or garden features.
