Painting Classes

AN INTRODUCTION TO OIL PAINTING VIA STILL- LIFE

Length: 8 weeks Cost: $235

This course will cover the 'Grisaille' Technique; this is one of the oldest techniques in painting, first attributed to Hieronymus Bosch. This system is perfect for beginners or advanced students as it divides the painting into three easy manageable stages of shape, tone, and colour. The student will learn how to build up and utilize the under-painting and then how to apply colour in the form of glazes.

Still life is a wonderfully subtle genre of art, full of forms balanced in space, sometimes meaningfully symbolic, sometimes plain and straightforward. In this class you will develop skills in painting light and shadow on form, composition, depth and meaning in still life. As you learn to render various shapes, textures and patterns you will learn to paint the space they occupy, the air around them and the light and shadow that enfold them. By the end of the course, students will able to apply this method to still life, landscape, portraits and the nude.

AN INTRODUCTION TO PAINTING AND COLOUR

Length: 8 weeks Cost: $235

This course will start by introducing the student to the basic techniques in painting. This is an important part of the painting process that many students don't properly understand. We will introduce students to colour theory and the use of graduated studies and exercises. You guided through a series of painting exercises, beginning with colour mixing and understanding the colour wheel. All the basics will be covered i.e. preparing painting surfaces and the use of different tools. Students will also work towards producing 'finished' paintings based on the theories and exercises introduced over the course of study. This class will save you hours of wasted time and paint. It will deal with the method of structuring the painting palette and mixing techniques, control of colour and identifying colours, properties of oil painting and the application of paint of mediums.

TEACHING A MODERN INTERPRETATION OF THE TRADITIONAL FORMS OF PAINTING IN OIL

Length: 8 weeks Cost: $235

This course will help you to gain skills and knowledge to paint in oils using modern materials based on traditional techniques of the old masters. This course is designed to encompass all aspects of creating a painting, using photographic reference, to help you increase your knowledge of composition, materials and glazing techniques.The classic method of painting sub-forms in shades of grey paint will be used to divide the processes of painting into easy stages of shape, tone, and colour.

The student will learn how to build up and utilize the under-painting and then how to apply colour in the form of glazes. The student may apply this method to any painting including still life, landscape, portraits, and the nude. With an understanding of shape, tone, and colour, you will have a solid foundation in the basics of oil painting and will be able to attempt other challenging styles of work. This system is perfect for beginners or advanced students. Under the guidance of experienced artists your individual creative style will be encouraged while you pursue your own projects.

PAINTING - FROM REALISTIC TO ABSTRACT PAINTING USING PHOTOGRAPHIC REFERENCES OR DEVELOP YOUR OWN PROJECT (OILS OR ACRYLICS)

Length: 8 weeks Cost: $235

This course will emphasize building strong painting skills and techniques. You will learn the method of structuring the painting palette, colour and the control of colour, mixing techniques, identifying colours, properties of painting and the application of paint. You will be guided, step by step, on how to create your own masterpiece using photographic references or develop your own project. Photographs can include portraits, landscape, still life photos from magazines and similar. The class is suitable for both beginner and advanced students. A series of demonstrations held throughout the term will explain procedures designed to help each student progress to creative finished art.

ABSTRACT PAINTING

Length: 8 weeks Cost: $235

Start on your journey into the world of abstract art. Use lines, patterns, shapes and texture in everyday objects and scenes as the basis for composition and then walk into the abstract. This course is structured to be valuable whether you are interested in abstraction as an end product or if you are a realist painter and wish to be able to use these ideas and approaches to improve your work and make stronger, more personal artistic statements.

Examine creative approaches to abstract painting by exploring a variety of different techniques. An individual and imaginative approach will be encouraged to develop confidence and allow individual creative strengths to emerge. Demonstrations and discussions will be an important ingredient of this course. Suitable for students of all levels.

PAINTING MATERIALS, TECHNIQUES AND ABSTRACT (OILS OR ACRYLICS AND PRINTMAKING)

Length: 7weeks Cost: $215 (Classes start 27th October)

Danilo is an extremely successful internationally recognised artist who has exhibited in 50 solo exhibitions and over 200 group showings. This course will lead students through painting techniques in oil or acrylics, and drawing, incorporating elements of colour and composition. This class will deal with understanding the different processes in painting including texture, harmony, shape, contrast, balance, proportion, graduation etc.

CHINESE BRUSH PAINTING

Length: 8 weeks Cost: $235

From the high art of Chinese calligraphy evolved the beauty and harmony of Chinese Brush painting. Students will learn how paper and brushes are used to achieve a mastery of the many types of brushstrokes, with each brushstroke being a result of the close observation of nature.

In this course, you will learn and practice the brushstrokes used in Chinese calligraphy in order to obtain the skills of line drawing used in painting. Students will be introduced to the uses of basic tools and materials including brush, ink, paper and ink slab, seal, (chop), colophon, inscription. You will explore the use of ink and the tonal effect of ink on Xian paper to produce visual effect. You will learn the use of brash to draw strokes and dots, to apply colour to paintings (wash with Chinese painting colour). You will study the techniques of painting landscape components, mountains, rocks, trees etc (18 types of skills of painting mountains, rocks etc in landscape paintings).

Students will examine the composition found in a traditional Chinese landscape painting and its differences compared to other types of landscape paintings, such as oil and watercolour landscape paintings. The influences on Chinese landscape painting and how Chinese artists think will be discussed. Students will also cover the mounting of traditional Chinese paintings and the use of traditional Chinese painting materials, to create contemporary paintings. Each topic will be explained and demonstrated by the instructor, followed by students practice.

OIL PAINTING DIRECTLY FROM THE LIFE MODEL

Explore the unique challenges and satisfying results involved in the representation of the figure. This course will address colour, compositions, mediums, flesh tones, the painting of draperies and the use of light and shadow as used in reproducing the life figure. You will examine light/dark and warm/cool relationships in relation to the form of the subject and to the composition of the painting.

Marcus Beilby is one of Australia's finest internationally recognised artists, he will teach in a realist impressionist style.

PAINTING THE PORTRAIT IN OILS FROM THE LIFE MODEL

A portrait offers a timeless conversation unique in its expressive qualities. In this class we learn about different approaches to portrait painting, understand important anatomical knowledge, and explore technical skills used to capture the likeness of a sitter. We have planned this class to develop the study of the head and achieve the characteristics and personality of the sitter. Students will expand the process of painting, study proportions, gestures and the emotional status of models. We will explain and demonstrate compositions, colours, values, and the dramatic use of light and the role of different mediums and brushes. You will be working in a gestured manner to produce a variety of finished paintings. Marcus brings humanity into his art creating personalities in the people he paints and human mood in his observation of life. Suitable for beginners and advanced students.

AN ADVANCED CLASS IN PAINTING THE PORTRAIT FROM THE LIFE MODEL IN OILS

Portraiture combines two special skills: the ability to work from observation, and the patience to allow the relationship between the drawer and the sitter to evolve.This class is suitable for people who have had some previous experience painting the portrait in oil paints. Investigate the advantages of planning your work first. See the importance of light. Explore the unique challenges and satisfying results involved in the representation of the portrait.

This course will address colour, compositions, mediums, flesh tones, the painting of draperies, and the use of light and shadow as used in reproducing the life figure. This course is for students with a prior foundation in oil painting interested in further developing technical skills and exploring narrative, observation, colour and the importance of light in your painting. Under the guidance of an experienced artist students will be able to evolve according to their individual style and preferences to encourage their own artistic style to express their creative self. Students will be encouraged to confront and solves problems of composition, value, intensity, and pictorial dynamics and learn the techniques that will enable them to affect other people's feelings and perceptions in the way they see fit.

This course is designed for aspiring artists looking for new approaches or searching for a deeper knowledge of creative processes involved in artistry or for experienced painters who want to develop their technical skills as they define their personal style. Students will confront the selection of their own subject matter, process, technique, scale, and intention of their work while they pursue their own projects.

DISCOVER THE LANDSCAPE IN OIL PAINTING

Working from photos this course introduces the student to the basic elements and principles of design and the practical application of landscape composition, developing an understanding of colour and the best way to capture the illusion of light in landscape oil painting. It will deal with techniques for rendering various elements such as sky, clouds, foliage, buildings, shadows etc. D'hange has won numerous art awards in portraiture and landscape, his landscapes displaying versatility and understanding of light and atmosphere. He uses the distance between the viewer and the painting to assist in his creation of the illusion of shape. D'hange's work is influenced by light, he believes that "Light is life ".Intermediate and advanced students will be catered for.

THE TIME-HONOURED PAINTING OF ICONS

This popular course covers the painting of an Icon, a short history of icons and the conception of Icons (theology). We will teach Icon painting techniques including the use of gold leaf for backgrounds and halos, tempera paint using eggs and pigments, oil and water- based gilding, the use of egg tempera in icon writing, the practice of icon writing and varnishing.
