Copy a Famous Masters and Create a Masterpiece in Oils

Length: 8 weeks Cost: $259

Learn  how to copy famous paintings of the works of the Master's. The students will be asked to consider a favourite painting and either do a faithful rendition or and interpretation of that painting. This class best suits students with a prior understanding of oil painting. This workshop will help you to learn technique as you will begin to think like the Master’s, understand the why's by doing. You don't have to worry about composition, colours, subject matter; it has been done for you already. Colour is one of the minds most difficult things to remember, especially certain shades but certain things in nature, colours, always stay about the same. Once you have learned how to mix them, they become imprinted in your mind and when a similar painting comes along you've already done it once, and you will remember. You will be encouraged to keep a diary of your mixtures, and techniques on how you accomplished a certain passage within the painting. So go ahead, copy famous paintings in order to learn the techniques by imitating the techniques. Creating the same style of art for the purpose of self-exploration and creation are legitimate actions on the part of an artist.

This course will centre on the essential elements of painting to teach students how to begin, compose, under-paint, develop colour and use glazing to add depth, and to finally finish a painting. Students will learn what to look for when viewing subjects, and how to think in terms for warm/cool, transparent/opaque. You will be taught the correct colours to use based on a more traditional palette and the colour wheel based on this palette, as opposed to the bright hued colour wheel usually used that has little practical application.
