TEACHING TRADITIONAL SKILLS
Length: 8 weeks Cost: $245
This course will centre around the essential elements of painting the still - life to teach students how to begin, compose, underpaint, develop colour and use glazing to add depth, and to finally finish a painting. Students will learn what to look for when viewing subjects, and how to think in terms for warm/cool, transparent/opaque. You will be taught the correct colours to use based on a more traditional palette and the colour wheel based on this palette as opposed to the bright hued colour wheel usually used that has little practical application.
Nick's approach to teaching would be to generally demonstrate all the various techniques he employs to produce different effects. Nicks techniques involve the use of glazing to create depth in transparent areas (shading, shadow etc.) and the use glazing to create atmospheric unity, applying a final glaze over the entire picture. This sets all the elements within the picture at the same temperature. In his own work he uses a palette of mainly low earths in the tradition of the Dutch School.
